Sitarji
British artist Joan Ramkisson, who goes by the artist name Sitarji, became interested in art after reading a book about Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia Okeefe that was given to her by a friend. Like both artist, Sitarji decided to challenge and teach herself how to paint. Born in Jamaica on a farm, at young age the artist established a natural love for the outdoors. As a little girl growing up surrounded by nature, she instinctively gravitated toward flowers and plants, and also learning their holistic and healing properties.
As the artist grew, her love evolved into a passion, causing her to obtain a degree in Biochemistry. The artist is also a licensed Esthetician.
In 2001, Sitarji created a series of Hand Painted BookMarks using different flowers to represent each month of the year. The series was a success, selling nationally and internationally. For inspiration, the artist frequently visits the various Botanical Gardens in New York and Floral and Plant shows throughout her travels.
Ten years to the present, the artist has been teaching art classes in several Assistant Living Facilities in Westchester, helping others establish a love for painting. Sitarji quotes, "My goal is to help people see Colors, Shapes and Textures in all that surrounds us”.
